June 18 – 2: WTMD

If you’re the kind of person who looks at tags on blog posts, you may have noticed that almost all of my music posts are also tagged “WTMD.” WTMD is the best radio station I have ever had the privilege of listening to. It’s a Baltimore NPR station, but unlike your typical NPR station, its focus is on current music. And I love  pretty much everything they play. If you’re in the Baltimore area, they broadcast on 89.7 fm, but even if you’re not, you can check them out online or download their streaming app. This station is seriously one of my favorite things about Baltimore – I can’t imagine surviving my commute without them.

June 17 – 2: On My Mind, In My Heart by Jesse Dee

The first time I heard this song, I thought it might be an “oldie”  that I’d just never heard somehow – it has such a great throwback, 50’s-60’s vibe to it. I’m starting to realize I’m a sucker for songs with a horn section – I love the saxophones on this one. It came on the radio as I was driving home this afternoon, and there was nothing to do but turn it up and sing along.

It doesn’t seem to have an artsy music video yet, but here’s a video of a live performance for a radio station:

June 11 – 1: Little Talks by Of Monsters and Men

This song is one of my recent favorites, and it came on the radio this morning. There’s nothing about it I don’t love . The lyrics are interesting. The tune is infectious in a good way – I can’t help singing along. And the horn section is amazing. Not to mention the general awesomeness of the band – “Of Monsters and Men” might be my favorite band name of all time, and they’re from Iceland.

It also has a video that I seriously love, and that totally fits the song:

June 7 – 3: “Harper Lee” by Little Green Cars

I love the stream of consciousness-style lyrics in this song – especially the kind of nonsensical part at the end about the mice.

I’m not a fan of the video, but here it is for anyone who’s interested:

June 4 – 1: Diane Young by Vampire Weekend

This song has really grown on me. The first time I heard it, I thought it was kind of annoying, but I’m starting to love its energy and repetitiveness,  actually – it’s one of those songs that you can sing along to at the top of your lungs when it comes on the radio.

I didn’t love the video, but here it is for anyone who’s interested:

June 1 – 2: Lightning Bolt by Jake Bugg

I love this song. The combo of his voice, and the simplicity of it (I think it’s just him and his guitar plus a drummer), and the rhythm – it just makes me happy.

May 30 – 2: Mrs. Robinson by The Lemonheads

This song came on the radio today as I was driving home from work today, which was awesome. I love both Simon and Garfunkel and punk covers, so this song gets double love. It also brought me straight back to my high school days. I downloaded this song in the era when it took two days to actually download a full song, and I think I put it on my early morning wakeup mixtape, too. (Which means I must have burned it to a cd, then dubbed it from that cd onto the tape – all so that I could listen to it on my walkman as I rode the bus to school. Ah, the good old days…)
